It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man of fortune must be in want of a wife … Jane Austin ‘Pride and Prejudice’

Every time I read this quotation it makes me smile. This is such an ironic but somehow relevant quotation even two hundred years or so after she wrote it. Upon close examination this quotation underlines the realities of marriage as opposed relationships of the romantic type of relationships explored by the Brontes and latterly popular cinematic storytelling…

The truth is that this one quote really tells us everything about the Jane Austin place as forward thinking feminist and possibly explains her rather untoward ending with a Royal Navy and Church of England family who profited from her works after her premature demise.

When we deep dive into this quotation. We see that that the vision wealth and status being a very key component in relationships for women. IF we juxtapose this to modern England, with gender pay gaps and a class system engrained in society. This idea of women marrying for status and security is now in England a common state practice. Men with usually military or government backgrounds marrying women for national interests and mutual security…

This quotation has throughout my life stayed with me as truest sign of what it means to be a woman in England. Resources, social status and marriage the considerations, duty as opposed to love…

This controversial quote is arguably as controversial today as it was all those years ago…
